FORMER AFC Totton fans’ player-of-the-season Baily Cargill penned a fourth deal in two years at AFC Bournemouth before admitting: “It’s up to me to deliver.”

The 20-year-old is set to remain at Cherries at least until the end of the 2017/18 season after signing a fresh three-year contract, writes Ned Payne.

A graduate of Cherries’ youth system, defender Cargill had previously inked a two-and-a-half year deal in October.

And having rubber-stamped his future, the England under-20 international said he knew it would be down to him to fulfil his part of the bargain.

Cargill, who had successful loan spell at Totton on his way up through the ranks, said: “I had two years left to run on my previous deal but now the club have given me another year and that makes me feel special.

“Obviously, they think highly of me and I really appreciate them showing that faith.

“I feel I need to repay the club for showing so much faith and giving me rewards through the contracts they have offered.

“My career is in my own hands. Everything has been laid out on the table for me to go and deliver.”

On the books of Leicester and Southampton as a schoolboy, Cargill has flourished since boss Eddie Howe converted him to a left-sided centre-back and fast-tracked him to the first-team squad.

He featured in every round of Cherries’ club record-breaking run to the League Cup quarter-finals last season.

Cargill also scored on his England under-20 debut against Canada at Dean Court and went on to represent his country at this summer’s Toulon Tournament.

He continued: “I was over the moon to find out that the club was going to offer me a new deal. It came as a surprise and it was a no-brainer to sign as soon as possible.

“I think it’s nice that they have rewarded me for doing well and this deal gives me the security of knowing that I’m going to be vying for a place at the club for the next few years.

"It gives me extra breathing space to make sure that I can work on my game and don’t have to worry about things off the field.

With Cherries’ inaugural Premier League campaign just over a fortnight away, Cargill admits his career is on the crest of a wave.

Speaking ahead of today’s (Saturday's) trip to Nantes, Cargill added: “I’m just really grateful to be doing what I’m doing as a 20-year-old lad.

I am living my dream at the minute. I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level in football and I think I’ve got a great opportunity.

“I can’t wait to get back out on the training pitch and show the gaffer what I can do. I’m glad the deal has been finalised because now I can crack on and prove to everyone that offering it to me wasn’t a waste of time.”
