WINCHESTER City will travel to Swindon Supermarine on Saturday week (September 12) after seeing off Wincanton Town 5-1 in the FA Cup preliminary round this afternoon.

City took time to settle, but their 12th-minute opener was well worth the wait with Geoff Dunn cleverly chipping the ball over the 'keeper following a sweet passing move.

Indecision in the Wincanton defence almost led to an instant second, but Warren Bentley’s strike rebounded off the post.

Bentley then had another effort that dribbled inches past the same upright.

The Toolstation Western One visitors were no mugs and it needed a timely interception by City defender Rob Flooks and a smart stop by City’s young ’keeper Brendon Norris to keep them at bay.

With half-time approaching Dunn chipped another effort onto the top netting for Winchester, who finally forced a second goal two minutes into stoppage time.

Zach Glasspool returned a corner to the taker Danny King, whose cross was headed in by Flooks.

Winchester stretched that lead early in the second-half when the ball ricocheted around the box after Matt Beham's shot had been blocked and Glasspool prodded into an empty net for 3-0.

Andy Mitchell netted for the visitors three minutes later but it was ruled out for offside.

Two chances followed for Bentley but he fired the first over after a jinking run and then, having been forced wide by 'keeper Greg Taylor, hit the outside of the post.

City’s fourth arrived on 71 minutes when Glasspool held the ball up before squaring for ex-Follands midfielder Jamie Barron to expertly pass it into the net.

Three minutes later Bentley made it 5-0, glancing the ball home from Flooks’s booming header into the danger zone.

The scoreline seemed a tad harsh on the visitors who at least got a souvenir to take back to Somerset on 80 minutes when Matt White found the top corner following good work by Jamie Jordan.

Young Winchester substitute Harrison Fay did everything but score in stoppage time, striking the bar and post before the ball was scrambled away.

City get back to Southern One South & West business on Monday (3pm) at home to an AFC Totton side smarting from a 3-1 FA Cup exit at AFC Portchester.
