WINCHESTER City wonder striker Warren Bentley made it 12 goals in five games to pile the misery on AFC Totton yesterday.

The Stags’ win-less start to the Southern One South & West campaign continued as they were sunk 3-1 at the Denplan City Ground.

Winchester boss Paul Masters felt Bentley looked a "bit rusty" in the FA Cup against Wincanton on Saturday having just returned from holiday.

But there was no doubting his sharpness as he struck twice against a Totton side weakened by injuries to attacking trio Mike Gosney, Craig Feeney and Nick Watts.

Yet again, the Stags conceded twice early on with Bentley finishing superbly in the sixth minute before Totton defender Marc Diaper skewed the ball into his own net under pressure from Adam Roberts.

Bentley struck again just after the hour before AFC Bournemouth loan defender Jack Simpson, who had been unable to start having got stuck in traffic travelling up from Weymouth, pulled one back for the Stags nine minutes later.

“Warren was the difference today, he looked sharp,” said Masters. “But I don’t want to make it The Warren Bentley Show because it’s not. The team work hard around him and defensively we were good. I played Leigh Mills at left-back because we knew Totton would pump balls into the box and we needed to be strong.

"Totton worked hard today and I'm sure they'll be alright once they get one or two of their injured players back. It looked like all the boys were playing for their manager."

Totton boss Steve Hollick said: “It took us 25 minutes to get going and we didn’t do brilliantly first half, but in the second half we matched them.

“But with sort of form Winchester are in, you know the ball has only got to fall to Warren Bentley and he’ll put it away.

"Young Jack Simpson didn't arrive until three minutes before the game and obviously he would have started, but these are the things that happen when your luck's out.

"It's another game where we conceded really early and it doesn't seem to matter if we change the formation, the personnel or whatever, it keeps happening and it is causing concern."

City move second on goal difference, while only point-less Bashley – whacked 6-1 at Wimborne - cushion Totton from the bottom spot.
