KENT proved an unhappy hunting ground for Gosport Borough and Basingstoke Town in the National League South yesterday.

Basingstoke slumped to the foot of the table with a 2-1 defeat at Margate where ex-Eastleigh striker Chris Flood's 18th-minute strike was sandwiched between Daniel Akindayini's winning double for the Gate.

The north Hampshire visitors had a dream chance to level late on, but Gate keeper Chris Lewington saved Liam Enver-Marum's penalty.

Fourth-placed Gosport fell foul of Alex Flisher's injury-time winner in a 2-1 reverse at Maidstone United.

Having slipped behind to a 64th-minute Jamie Coyle header from a corner, Borough levelled with ten minutes remaining when sub David Jerrard's pass deflected in off Bobby-Joe Taylor for an own goal.

But their hopes of a point were sunk by Flisher's late winner on the Gallagher Stadium's 3G pitch.

Borough boss Alex Pike, who is no fan of the artificial surface, said afterwards: "We played Havant on a beach on Tuesday, but I'm a traditionalist and would rather play on that pitch than the one today. It's not an excuse as to why we have lost, but Maidstone know how to play it and that's made the difference."
