TEAM Solent captain Jesse Waller-Lassen is still waiting to hear back from Yeovil Town after his latest trial match for the Sky Bet League Two strugglers.

In the meantime it’s business as usual for the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster who continues to catch the eye for James Taylor’s upwardly mobile Southampton Solent University side.

The skilful 5ft 7in forward looked a class act at Test Park on Saturday, scoring one goal - his 19th of the season - and making the other two in a 3-1 Sydenhams Premier Division victory over Hamworthy United.

Now in the second year of an applied sports science degree at Solent, Waller-Lassen has had three trial matches and one training session with Yeovil which may yet earn him a passage back into the professional game.

If it should come off, all well and good. If not, the 23-year-old from Crouch End, North London will take heart from the experience and concentrate on helping Team Solent extend their six-match winning streak which has lifted them to seventh in the Wessex top flight.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed being at Yeovil and showing what I can do. I feel I did enough in the trial games and definitely did myself justice. It’s up to them now. If they want my style of player they will sign me. I’m waiting to hear back.

“It’s definitely flattering and nice to know they’re at least interested in me.

“I’d like to play at a higher level but, if that’s not possible, then Solent’s the right place for me. For my style of football, it’s a nice fit.

“Dorchester (of the Southern Premier Division) came in for me, but I don’t see the point of just jumping up one league. If I’m going to leave Solent, it would have to be a step up.”

Waller-Lassen’s talent, allied to the pace, strength and sheer energy of his Solent teammates, made the university side too big a handful for Hamworthy - despite a dogged display of defiance by visiting keeper Gerard Benfield.

They took a fourth-minute lead when Waller-Lassen set up powerhouse Tobi Adekunle to score with the aid of deflection and the skipper himself doubled the advantage on the hour with a low, driven finish following a short corner.

Ex-Arsenal youngster Sam Byles gave away a cheap penalty, allowing Paddy Hester to halve Solent’s lead on 73 minutes, but that simply triggered another wave of pressure from the super-fit Students who crowned victory when Waller-Lassen’s deep free was forced over the line by Martin Johnson.

“We started quickly and were massively on top and should have put the game to bed,” said boss Taylor.

“I thought we’d kick on after the second goal, but then we gave away a stupid penalty and let them back in it before the third goal killed the game.

“We’ve got 16 to 18 players around who are all fit , strong, playing well and impressing.

“Yeovil haven’t got back to us yet about Jesse and I’m a bit surprised we’ve not heard anything.

“Dorchester tried their luck and put in an approach, which was turned down. Jesse’s better than one or two levels up. He needs to crack on.

"If he goes, we'll miss him, but no one's going to hold him back if the right club comes in."
