HE has had an excellent first season at Saints but Virgil van Dijk insists that his best is yet to come and says he isn't scared about addressing his weaknesses.

The Dutchman, who has just won the club’s Player of the Month award for March, says he is loving every bit of his St Mary’s stay after his summer switch from Scottish giants Celtic.

“I love it here,” he said. “Everything is very good. Me and my family are enjoying every day and every bit of it.”

The centre-back took little time to adapt to the Premier League and has become a mainstay in Ronald Koeman’s side, having played 29 successive full games in the league since his £13m transfer from Parkhead.

But both van Dijk and Koeman agree that the former Groningen man has room for improvement.

The Saints manager said last month that his 24-year-old centre-back is crucial for his team but, as yet, not the complete defender.

Koeman added that his focus and leadership skills need work.

“I still think I have my best years in front of me,” van Dijk explained.

“If I keep improving it’ll will be with the help of my team-mates, the coaches and everybody around. And the fans as well who play a big part.

“Hopefully I can keep improving and get the maximum out of myself.”

Reassuringly for Saints, van Dijk is not scared about discussing and working on his weaknesses.

“Sometimes you want to do better than you’re already doing but there’s always a lot of room for improvement and that’s something I work on, know and speak about,” he said.

“I want to get the maximum out of myself, so I’m very satisfied so far and I’ll be even more satisfied if we reached Europe.”

He added:“I think (I've made) a consistent impression. That’s something that I’ve been working on and trying to get as well to play on a consistent level.”

It is a mentality that stretches throughout the Saints squad.

“We speak with everyone,” Van Dijk said. “The whole staff speak with each-other. Everybody wants to get the maximum out of everyone.

“That’s a very good sign here at this club because everybody wants to get the maximum out of themselves and that’s happening with me as well.”
