HAMPSHIRE sides managed to avoid the third relegation place in London 3 South-West on the final day.

Eastleigh breathed a sigh of relief after beating Old Mid Whitgiftian 16-12, condemning their opponents to the drop.

And US Portsmouth, also in danger at the start of the day, made sure of another term in SW3 by defeating Old Tiffinains 54-27.

Trojans lost 36-12 at leaders Camberley and finished one place off the relegation zone.

Eastleigh came flying out of the blocks against Old Mids and captain Paul Fudio powered over for the opening score. Phil Baldwin added the conversion before slotting home a penalty and a 30m drop goal for a half-time lead.

The visitors hit back with a couple of tries after the break, one converted, but man of the match Baldwin added another three points with a penalty.

Trojans also took an early lead in their game with a Nik Wotton penalty but Camberley hit straight back with an unconverted try.

The Hampshire side kept up the pressure and after 20 minutes were in the lead again with two more Wotton kicks.

Five minutes before the end of the half Camberley worked a good try then managed another right on half time to take a 15-9 lead.

Although Camberley scored a try early in the second half, another Wotton penalty kept Trojans in the game.

However, a number of injuries requiring reshuffle in the scrum and tiredness, allowed the home side to run in three late tries.
