EASTLEIGH'S summer signing spree has continued with the addition of Luton Town midfielder Jake Howells on a two-year contract.

The 25-year-old became Spitfires manager Chris Todd's second signing after they added experienced Welshman David Pipe last week from Forster Green Rovers.

Howells, who was released by Luton two weeks ago, is principally a midfielder but can also play in defence.

That will add versatility to the Vanarama National League outfit, who are on a rebuild mission following a number of player departures.

"I am really pleased to be signing for such an ambitious club as Eastleigh and really looking forward to the challenge ahead," he said.

The former Yeovil Town loanee was born in St Albans but has played for Wales Under-21s along with appearances for England C.

He came through the Hatters' academy and made his debut aged 17 as a substitute against Huddersfield Town at the end of the 2007/08 season.

Howells made 334 appearances for Luton in an eight-year spell at Kenilworth Road, scoring 31 goals along the way.

He was initially frozen out of the Luton team for refusing to sign new contract, but worked his way back in to the side for the second half of last season.

However, Nathan Jones, the Luton manager, released 11 players including Howells at the end of their League Two campaign.

At the time, Howells let his feelings known on social media.

Howells said on Twitter: "Feel a bit disrespected after how long I've been with the club and been so loyal with them through minus points, relegations and administration that they have left it until the last day to tell me I won't be getting my contract renewed.

"Shame to end that way, also didn't get a chance to say goodbye and show my appreciation for all the years. Can't thank the fans enough for supporting me since day one."

He has now arrived at the Silverlake Stadium ahead of another push for promotion next term.
