Victor Wanyama has been congratulated by the President of his country after signing for his new club.

Hours after completing an £11m switch from Southampton to Premier League rivals Tottenham, Wanyama was congratulated by the President of Kenya.

A popular footballing icon in Kenya Wanyama was the first ever Kenyan player to score in the UEFA Champions League when he scored for his former club Celtic in 2012.

He has earned over 30 caps for the Kenyan national team since making his international debut in May 2007 at the age of 15.

Wanyama has had a contract offer on the table at St Mary's for some time, but showed no interest in extending his stay, despite a hugely successful three-season spell.

The Kenyan is reunited with former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino and has signed a five-year deal at White Hart Lane, where he will likely compete with England's Eric Dier for a starting role.

Posting on social media website Twitter, the Kenyan President, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, said: “Congratulations @VictorWanyama for completing the move to @SpursOfficial from @SouthamptonFC.

"Kenya is proud of you.”

The 24-year old, who is originally from Nairobi, responded by saying: “Thank you Sir, I'll work hard and keep flying the [Kenyan flag] high.”
