Dean Stoneman remains second in the Indy Lights series after being cruelly denied a fifth podium in as many races.

Starting from fifth, the Bishop's Waltham ace pulled off another stunning start at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA.

The 25 year-old skilfully worked his way up to second on the wet track.

Following a crash, he went wheel-to-wheel with championship rival Ed Jones.

Stoneman managed to edge a lead and looked strong for another win. Jones had other ideas.

Two corners later, Stoneman was left with a flat tyre after being forced on to the grass as the cars came together, damaging his front right valve.

The Andretti team sent the number 27 Stellrecht Mazda back out with slick tyres due to the drying track.

Stoneman then produced the fastest laps of the race.

In a stunning display, he pulled back the one-lap deficit to finish an impressive ninth.

He said: “I’m disappointed we didn’t get more. The car was great and I was confident we could get on the podium again.

"There was some questionable driving out there which cost me my race and you simply can’t do what some of them are doing. We will regroup and come back stronger from this.”
