Ryan Bertrand has been ruled out for Saints’ trip to Old Trafford.
The England left back was forced to sit out the opening day draw with Watford through injury, with Saints hoping he might be ready to face Jose Mourinho’s men on Friday night.
However, Saints boss Claude Puel confirmed Bertrand will remain out of contention, with Matt Targett expected to continue in the left back role.
“Ryan Bertrand cannot play this game,” said Puel.
“He has a little injury and he cannot participate this week in the training session and cannot participate in this game.”
Jose Fonte is expected to be considered fit enough to face United after being an unused sub against Watford after just 45 minutes of pre-season action.
