WINCHESTER City boss Ian Saunders admitted he “couldn’t have asked for a better week in football” after leading Winchester to a third straight league and cup win.

Yesterday’s 4-1 league defeat of rock-bottom Bridgwater Town made it 14 goals scored and just one conceded in eight whirlwind days that have transformed City’s season.

Saunders, though, will do everything possible to keep Winchester feet firmly planted on the ground coming into another huge week for the club.

They travel to Southern One South & West strugglers Wantage Town on Tuesday (7.45pm), looking to keep climbing from 18th, followed by Harrow Borough away in the FA Cup third qualifying round on Saturday.

City let themselves down briefly, allowing Harry Horton a free header to give Bridgwater the lead, but Howard Neighbour levelled from the spot having himself been brought down.

Winchester then forged ahead on 27 minutes when Craig Feeney headed Taz Roberts’ cross back across goal for Stuart Green to net a left-foot volley and, come half-time, it was 3-1 when Neighbour buried his second of the match.

By then Bridgwater had been reduced to ten men when their captain Horton picked up a second yellow card.

Green struck again on 75 minutes, tapping home after Jamie Brown’s header had struck the post.

“It wasn’t our best performance, but we did alright,” said Saunders, laughing: “A week ago no one wanted to talk to me, but three wins later and I’m everyone’s best mate!

“It was a weird game. We were disappointed to go one down, which seems to be the pattern of our league form.

“But once we’d scored our third not long after they’d had a man sent was sent off, the game was pretty well done and it became a bit of a chess match.

“We weren’t as good as we could have been today, but we managed to grind out a result.”

Adam Tomasso got another hour under his belt after a month out of football and City should be at full strength to face Wantage.

“Everyone’s got half an eye on the FA Cup game and my biggest job now is to keep them focused on the league – that's our bread and butter,” said the boss.
