EASTLEIGH Rugby Club's women's team played their first match in 20 years on Sunday, taking on Southampton at Test Park.

Eastleigh only reformed their team in the summer and most of the players had never played rugby before commencing their training, facing off against an established Southampton side, who were also introducing some players new to the game.

Eastleigh, who as a club were namechecked by former Red Roses captain Catherine Spencer during her commentary of the World Cup final on Saturday morning, threw themselves into their first game and although their more experienced opponents had the upper hand, claiming the 65-0 win, never took a backward step.

Both teams enjoyed the host club’s excellent hospitality after a game played in a great spirit which saw some excellent tries scored by the home club and dogged defence and determination from Eastleigh.

Eastleigh will now travel to Newbury on Sunday, hoping to build on their bright beginnings.

The club are on the lookout for new players.

Eastleigh train on a Wednesday evening from 7pm at The Hub, Bishopstoke Road SO50 6LA.

No previous experience is necessary, with all ages welcome. For further details e-mail n.rand@sky.com
