THE SAINTS All-Stars match at St Mary's designed to help keep the club afloat has been scrapped – due to a lack of interest from fans.

There had been rallying calls for supporters to attend the game, which was due to take place on Sunday, in a bid to raise funds to give administrator Mark Fry more time in which to save the club from extinction.

However, ticket sales were so poor – only around 1,500 were sold by yesterday morning – the plug has been pulled, meaning the race against time to save Saints is really now on.

Lawrie McMenemy (pictured), who was drafted in to help put together players for the match, now faces having to ring round the likes of Matt Le Tissier and most of the surviving members of the 1976 FA Cup final squad to tell them not to make the journey to St Mary’s.

He said: “Unfortunately it’s been decided to call the game off because of a lack of ticket sales.

“Even though the game has been advertised for two-and-a-half weeks, by Wednesday morning there had not been enough sold and a lack of interest.
