Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez flying to England to sign for Southampton Football Club after deal agreed with Bologna

8:48am Friday 17th August 2012

Saints 'agree record fee for Ramirez'

SAINTS have reportedly agreed a club record £12m deal for Uruguayan star winger Gaston Ramirez.

The €15m move for the 21-year-old would smash Southampton's record fee - the £7m paid earlier in the summer for striker Jay Rodriguez - and represent a huge coup for the St Mary's side.

The 21-year-old international has been quoted in Italy today as saying he has agreed a four-year deal with Saints to complete a switch from Serie A side Bologna.

As reported by the Daily Echo , Ramirez had turned down a move to Spurs after the White Hart Lane club failed to match his wage demands.

"Bologna has reached an economic agreement with Southampton," he told Corriere Dello Sport.

"There are only a few details, but they have found the agreement in principle. And the English club has reached an agreement with me.

"It is an offer that you cannot refuse. They give me so much money that I put in my life and support the whole family."

Ramirez added: "They believe in me in every way... And above all I have said that they are going to grow.

"Southampton is a newly promoted team in the English top flight, but they have the means to stand tall in a few years. And with me they are going to build. It's all very stimulating. Even if it is a little strange".

The report in Italy suggests Ramirez will be paid €2m a year and a €1m signing on fee by Saints - all net.

If true, that means the winger could be paid in the region of £70,000 a week before deductions and a signing on fee of almost £800,000, which is believed to make him comfortably the highest paid player at the club.

Ramirez is 70 per cent owned by Bologna and 30 per cent owned by his previous club, Peñarol, meaning Saints will have to pay both clubs to secure the midfielder's services.

Reports in Uruguay suggest Southampton will pay €15m (£11.85m) to Bologna and a further fee to Peñarol, which could be around €5m (£3.55m).

On the day that Poopey are told they can sign 10 siht, players on a month by month contract (probably on minimum wage) we go and smash our record buying a player that was chased by Inter, Liverpool and turned down Spurs.......We're on the up!!!
......Will he require a work permit??
Knowing the FA they will refuse the work permit on the grounds that we're not Chelsea, Man City, Man utd or Arsenal.

I'm no tax expert but £2m net is about £2.9m gross which is £55k per week, assuming a 45% tax rate. I'd guess that they can do clever things like paying his salary offshore, using trusts etc, to get his marginal rate of tax much lower than this though.

Everything Southampton Need To Know About Gaston Ramirez…

The recent success of Uruguay at international level over recent years has certainly caught the eye: Oscar Tarbarez’s side have won plenty of plaudits for their effective, attacking football, culminating in their victory at the 2011 Copa America tournament. The likes of Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani are undoubtedly recognised world-class players, and there are a crop of talented youngsters coming through hoping to emulate the success of their compatriots, such as Sebastian Coates, Abel Hernandez and Bologna’s Gaston Ramirez, the latter of whom has long been linked with Liverpool, and reports this weekend have suggested that the Reds have made an official bid for the young attacking midfielder.

Having joined Bologna in 2010 in a €2.5m move from Penarol, Ramirez has really gone on to establish himself as one of the hottest young talents in Europe. He showed great promise during his debut season in Italy, yet he failed to become a regular starter under then Bologna coach Alberto Malesani, making 17 starts (and 10 substitute appearances) in all competitions, whilst scoring 7 goals – a very respectable return given his limited playing time. It wasn’t until Stefano Piolo took over as head coach in October 2011 that he really started to flourish and consistently show his talents, scoring 8 goals in 28 starts. When Piolo took over, the Rossoblu were bottom of the table without a win all season, yet he led them to a 9th place finish in Serie A; a remarkable achievement for a cash-strapped club whose realistic ambitions are simply to stay in the division.

It is easy to see why Ramirez is coveted by a whole host of Europe’s elite; he has everything to his game. His elegant playing style is a joy to watch, his intelligence when in possession belies his age, and his all round technique is fantastic. In a world where the diminutive playmaker is now all the rage, at 6ft Ramirez is far more physically imposing, which would stand him in good stead should he move to a more laboriously demanding league. Whilst the success rate of players moving from Italy to England over the past decade is far from impressive, those that do go on to impress are generally not players who have come up through the Italian youth system, but rather made their name in Serie A before moving to the Premiership.

His elegant playing style is a joy to watch, his intelligence when in possession belies his age, and his all round technique is fantastic.
How Ramirez would potentially fit in at Liverpool is unclear, largely down to not knowing what system Brendan Rodgers will use heading in to next season. Should be decide to persist with the 4-3-3 system that brought him great success with Swansea, then it is likely Ramirez would alternate between playing as the most attacking of the midfield three, or as the wide forward on other side of the striker. At Bologna he started off playing wide left, but under Piolo has done his best work playing either as a trequartista or on the right of midfield where he can cut inside on his left foot. On the one hand, you can praise his versatility and ability to perform in a variety of roles, yet on the other hand you can question whether his inability to hold down one single position means that neither the player nor coach really know what his Ramirez’s most effective position is.

There is the sense that Ramirez needs to improve on his off-the-ball work – although that is a criticism that can be levelled at many young players, particularly those that play in attacking positions. He is often the man who is sacrificed in the latter stages of games when a more defensive player is needed to see the game out, and, thus, he rarely finishes 90 minutes (he completed the full game only 7 times in the 10/11 season, and 9 times last season). Brendan Rodgers has always stressed the importance of working hard when not in possession to win the ball back, and in the fast-paced Premiership where players have often been picked for their work ethic and tactical discipline (James Milner, Park Ji Sung and Dirk Kuyt immediately spring to mind), any disinclination to contribute to the defensive side of the game will do nothing to endear him to manager and fans alike.

The Reds are unlikely to be alone in attempting the lure Ramirez to Anfield, and the recent Gylfi Sigurdsson saga – the Icelandic midfielder had looked set to be reunited with Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, but now appears to be on the verge of a move to rivals Tottenham, who offered him a more lucrative contract – has proven that, for all their illustrious history, money talks in the modern game, and, with no Champions League football to offer, Liverpool are going to have to really splash the cash if they want to sign players of Ramirez’s calibre. Whether the club’s American owners will do that, however, after spending the best part of £80m on homegrown talent last season with little return, remains to be seen.

With no Champion’s League football to offer, Liverpool are going to have to really splash the cash if they want to sign players of Ramirez’s calibre
At 21, there is no rush for Ramirez or Bologna to facilitate a big-money move away from the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. With Marco Di Vaio, the club’s talismanic veteran striker, having moved to the MLS, the young Uruguayan would likely become the centrepiece of the side should he stay, and another impressive season would drive his price – and interest in the player himself – right up. Any interested parties would also be best served to complete a deal for Ramirez before the upcoming 2012 Olympics, as an impressive showing in London – where Uruguay are amongst the favourites – will only add an extra couple of million euros on to his already substantial price tag.

Gaston Ramirez possesses all the tools to follow in the footsteps of his fellow countryman and be successful at Anfield. He would certainly add creativity and goals from midfield that were sorely lacking from the Reds last season and, whilst he would not come cheap, he fits FSG’s transfer policy of buying younger players with potential before they develop in to world-class stars. Liverpool fans should be hoping, then, that a move for the Fray Bentos born attacker is more than just a pie in the sky.

If were also to get Phillips or Lens, then I don't think I'd be able to feel negative again for some time!
Exciting times to be a Saint, fo-sho!

Liverpool fans should be hoping, then, that a move for the Fray Bentos born attacker is more than just a pie in the sky.
hahahahaha COYSaints!!!!!
Thanks for the info. Very encouraging news, let's hope we complete the deal today. Followed hopefully by Centre Backs and another Goalkeeper.

DATED AUG 17, 2012 5:51 AM ET

Gaston Ramirez says Southampton have agreed a club record deal with Bologna to sign him.

UP FOR SALE
Get caught up with all the movers and shakers in this summer's transfer window.

The 21-year-old midfielder had been approached by Tottenham, Liverpool and Inter Milan earlier this summer.

But now newly-promoted Southampton are on the verge of a huge coup by landing the Uruguay international, who has just played at the Olympics.

Saints boss Nigel Adkins was looking for a big name attacking midfielder and had failed with a bid for PSV Eindhoven's Dutch international Jeremain Lens, but he switched his attentions to Ramirez and looks to have got his man.

Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese has brokered the deal, which is believed to be worth €15million (£11.8million).

Ramirez has confirmed he is ready to fly to England to conclude a move to St Mary's.

"Bologna will tell me on Friday if I can move," he told the Corriere dello Sport.

"The truth is that I think, yes, this time I am moving. Bologna has reached an agreement with Southampton, and there are only a few details to be found but the agreement in principle is done."

Ramirez admits that Southampton have offered him very good terms, and he is happy to become a key player for them.

"The English club has reached an agreement with me, it is the classic offer that you cannot refuse for my life as a whole and my family.

"But they believe in me in every way, I will be essential and above all they are going to grow. Southampton is a newly promoted team in the English top-flight but they will become a big team in years to come.

"They have told me they are going to build and that is very stimulating."

7th, you insult donkeys everywhere.

The donkey has been used as a working animal for at least 5000 years. There are more than 40 million donkeys in the world, mostly in underdeveloped countries, where they are used principally as draught or pack animals. Working donkeys are often associated with those living at or below subsistence levels. Small numbers of donkeys are kept for breeding or as pets in developed countries.

I'm no tax expert but £2m net is about £2.9m gross which is £55k per week, assuming a 45% tax rate. I'd guess that they can do clever things like paying his salary offshore, using trusts etc, to get his marginal rate of tax much lower than this though.
My apologies I should've mentioned it's €2m not £2m. So with the exchange rate it probably works out at about 28k-30k a week. He was on a modest wage at bologna, in the region of 7k-10k a week.

Or did you just hear Nige say to that SKY reporter "Don't call me a philosopher, you overweight glob of grease."?

It all started in Italy when Nige was having lunch with Nicola and a waiter spoke Italian to a puzzled Nige. Nicola explained: "That daft waiter told you to use the fork." and Nige thought he said: "That Darth Vader told you to use the force."

Anyhow, you'll hear Nige send the team out to "Remember, use the force" on Sunday and things from Rickie like "This is Red 7 - I'm going in!" And of course new signings will be "getting on the Millennium Falcon"

I'd love to let all of you know on here who will be next but I must keep shtum for the time being until we get to the medical stage on my other recommendations.

Unfortunately Nige is not taking up my formation recce yet, but likely will once the new men are in the bag. I can tell you that this is a doughnut with Ramirez in the hole - and that info might give you a tantalising clue as to who is yet to arrive.

And before you ask - NO I have not asked for any remuneration for all this and YES I have paid full price for my four season tickets.

WOW I do find power the ultimate aphrodisiac.

THE HIGHER THEY GET, THE FEWER!
I think we're going to adopt what is known as the Star Wars formation. Don't ask me to name the particular star warsy things involved, I'm no geek, but it's that scene from the Return of the Jedi where it's all out intergalactic warfare. The Empire goes on the attack before Luke and his buddies, with that immense ugly grey thing at the back, unleash 10 nimble, mobile, pointy fighter jet thingies in a sort of 1-0-10 formation and win the day.

Don’t panic, we’re going to thrash City 12-11!

…. and, just to really p1ss Montecristo off, in Nigel Skywalker we trust!
Ok - who leaked it? That is indeed the theme the club has adopted for the "Empire Strikes Back" season.

C-3PO will be racing R2-D2 at half time at home matches. Chewbacca is our new Mascot. Jabba the Hutt was going to serve pies but has just signed for Poopey's midfield.

OBI WAN BALONEY!
That's class! I never really got the thing about Princess thingy being hot but, to show my total support for the lads, I'm willing to give it a go.

As for a CB, 'according to reports in L'Equipe, Arsenal have asked for permission to start talks regarding a deal for Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. Montpellier have already rejected a bid from AC Milan for Yanga-Mbiwa and want to keep the player for this season.' If we could snatch him from under everyone's nose ......

In that case, I'd just like to say:
1. Nige, you're a top bloke and a fantastic manager,
2. Nicola, thank you for the dream and please don't feel that the genuine fans are anything but right behind you, and
3. Nige and Nicola, please remember that it is Montechristo - and him alone - who has saved our transfer window through the pressure he put you both under to get off your lazy butts and get things moving. A. He's unambitious for signing for Saints and so for that reason they don't want him now anyway.
B. He's obviously not that good then...or they would have him right now.
C. This season will be a good experience for him until next season when they can nick him off us for 25 million or so.

Really hope we can surprise a few of the clubs this season that think they are automatically owed success over Saints.

I think the bookies will be changing their odds on Saints pretty quick if the other signing that is iminent comes to fruition, remember NC was a top Swiss banker so fans don't worry about the finance just enjoy the ride.

There is nothing they can say. nothing. They have no squad, they have no ground, they have no money and they have no clue.

This is from Sky Sports Italia....

I know that it is not official yet, even if it is the right offer for Bologna,” the 21-year-old told Sky Sport Italia. “There are just a few details missing with Bologna for my transfer to the Saints.

“They tracked me with more intensity than the other clubs and that struck me. An agreement was reached with my agent and I’m ready to fly out for my medical.”

“Every player wants to aim for the top, but they have promised me a primary role in their plans and that is important,” added the South American.

“I’m young and I need to play – that is the only way to keep growing.”

“I would have wanted to stay in Italy, but this is football,” he explained.

“Today’s situation shows that there is no money in Italy and a change of air for me was inevitable.

“Inter? There was nothing official. Southampton were the club who decided to sign me and I’m happy that I’ll be going there.”

Happy Days!

I think what you're try to get at in your own inimitable way is to suggest that Norwich Union were somehow left out of pocket when we went into administration and that this equates to us stealing money from pensioners.

The jump in logic between owing money to Norwich Union and this causing pensioners to somehow have their montly payments reduced in any way is pretty staggering and quite embarrassing for you, but the fact Markus Leibherr settled all our debts in full kind of makes your point just seem plain weird.

He's obviously never actually been to s**hampton otherwise I doubt he would be quite so happy to be going there. Hope he packs his stab vest. Bless
It is funny how we see each other. Poopey lot seem to think it's a ghetto in Soton( what is this stab vest thing??) when it's always seemed very chilled out compared to other places I've lived.
Same time, Saints fans think that heading down the M27 is a ticket to bedlam..From what I've seen, it is a nasty little place is Poopey, but there you go.

Actually, on reflection, this would be a terrible signing. Like half of our squad, once the top teams realise how good he is (and all the others are), they'll be swooping like vultures.

We'd have been far better off getting in 10 really cr4p journeymen, who nobody else wants, on a month-long loan :)
so says STRASBOURG saints............

What a complete clown , plz stay where you are
I'm at the Rose Bowl, supporting Hampshire .......... I doubt you've ever heard of it ......

Please can I leave at close of play? I have a Eurostar to catch on Monday!

He’s a bit simple and jolly in life as he sees good in other people and tries to better and educate them.
Me I see idiots and I just want to punch them out, but I am his wing man for the season opening weekend so am on my best behaviour.
So what exactly is your problem?

Like, Mush!

Oh, I say! Great catch at slips, new man gone for a duck!

Might just pop back again tomorrow evening if it's still going.

By then, Bournemouth should be top of Div 1.

Which reminds me, whatever happened to all those twisted, jealous Cherries (sn) and the nice ones, of course?

Um ........ now, let me think ........ where might I find them??????? Oh, but of course, they'll be on The News site, won't they?

I expected it to sell out, i am also surprised that the Wigan game did not sell out as it is linked to Utd game. Mind you it turns out that there are 4,500 tickets left for Pompey vs Bournemouth, greatest fans in the world? Only when they are in the Premiership it seems. We had gates of 26,000 in L1.
Wait a minute, me and my mates haven't got our Wigan tickuts yet (never seen them before), so hope they're not tied in with the ManU game (seen too much of them) and understood that the City tickuts were sold out on the first day of sale-what's going on? So,other than a possible shortage of visitors Wigan WILL sell out-no worries.
My prediction for the season:
Laffin Boy will continue to make those wacky crazy yet intellectually insightful wisecracks every time his carer takes his straightjacket off, in fact, I can hear that velcro and buckles being released now...here we go...over to you...Laff in Stocks...

This will really make an enormous difference if he can give Saints that creative spark, lets face it Guly was never going to hack it. And he scores goals,3rd richest club in the league, why not?
Can't let another WUM comment go unchallenged and in case the dear reader missed this comment, so it's on record again.
Has it not occurred to you that Guly is a goalscorer and will probably be one to benefit from Ramirez's arrival, and our subsequent style of play?
Try and say something positive without adding a nasty, bitter caveat, think it through Large Bloke.

PLEASE DO NOT SIGN HIM NICOLA!
He will smash the wages structure at the club and may lead to its ruination, with all the other establised players being unhappy at his £70,000 per week.
He is just another gold digger!

At 8 48am Friday, report says Ramirez is flying to UK to join Southampton. At 5.56 pm report says Bologna deny deal. I hope he stayed on that plane, cos this guy is Fantastic. Ok there is a lot of money involved, but at 21 years old, and as talented as he is, he will prove to be a bargain. In regards to his wages, and the clubs rigid wage structure, I believe that Saints management is smart enough to realize that things will have to change in that department to attract this type of player. Win Win situation IMO.
