Former Saints striker Bradley Wright-Phillips has equalled an MLS record after scoring 27 goals in his first season for New York Red Bulls.
The 29 year-old bagged 25 goals in 121 appearances during three years with Saints, but finished his first season for New York with 27 in 32 appearances after scoring both in a 2-0 win against Kansas City.
Wright-Phillips, whose New York teammates include ten-goal Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill, revealed his disappointment at not finishing the MLS season with a hat-trick after being awarded the Budweiser Golden Boot.
He said: “I’m happy but I’m also devastated because I had the chances to get 28. I’ll have to brush up on my finishing and hopefully get it then!
“I’m just glad I don’t have to talk about the record anymore or see it on twitter or instagram. But it’s been a fun season.”
Wright-Phillips was prolific in League One for Plymouth Argyle (21 goals in 2010-11) and Charlton Athletic (22 goals in 2011-12) but only registered double figures once during three seasons for Saints in the Championship (11 goals in 2006-07).
