Nathaniel Clyne made his England bow in the European Championship qualifier against Slovenia as Roy Hodgson's side made it four wins from four.

Although centurion Wayne Rooney grabbed most of the headlines, it was also a big occasion for the Southampton defender as the 23-year-old was handed his first cap.

Here, Press Association Sport's Mark Bryans take a look at how the latest young player given a chance by Hodgson faired.

TEMPERAMENT

Not the kind of fixture that was ever going to prove daunting, Clyne did not look out of place lining up alongside more experienced international figures. Showed the maturity of a player who burst on to the first-team scene at Crystal Palace as a 17-year-old and never looked over-awed by the occasion, but will have been disappointed to have picked up a needless late caution.

ATTACKING THREAT

Known for his ability to get forward and start attacks, Clyne powered past Andraz Kirm after 15 minutes before feeding Rooney in the box as England looked to turn up the tempo following a slow start. Not many other examples of his pacey runs down the flank in the first half but was able to push further up in support of Raheem Sterling as Hodgson changed his approach for the second half.

DEFENSIVE DUTIES

Could not help the England defence to a record-equalling sixth successive clean sheet after Jordan Henderson's unfortunate own goal but stuck to his task down the right and kept Kirm fairly quiet. Never found wanting or caught out of position, although the fact he has made more tackles than any other Premier League player this season was fairly redundant in this match.

IMPACT

With Rooney reaching 100 caps and Danny Welbeck scoring a brace in a comeback victory, it is a match debutant Clyne will remember fondly - even if England fans may not. Did nothing to suggest he cannot take to football at this level and has thrown his hat into the ring to make the right-back slot his own - with Calum Chambers and Chris Smalling his competition in the current squad. But he will face much sterner tests in the future if he is to rack up the caps, starting on Tuesday night if he is selected to face Scotland in their friendly at Celtic Park.
