Ronald Koeman is hoping that a fully fit squad to choose from will help Saints find their scoring form again.

Saints drew a third successive blank at St Mary’s as they suffered a fifth home league and cup game without victory as Liverpool gunned them down 2-0.

Saints have now netted just once in their last four Premier League games – three of which have been at St Mary’s.

The side look short of confidence in the final third and with just four points now separating third and seventh place in the Premier League, it is something Saints must put right if they are to have a rousing finale to the season.

Koeman is hoping that the return of the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Shane Long from injury, and Ryan Bertrand from suspension, will help.

“Keeping working, use training sessions to keep movements, confidence to the players,” said Koeman when he was asked how Saints were going to start scoring again.

“Now we have more good players available. We didn’t have that in the last few weeks and we have more options and maybe we can use that.”

Overall, Koeman was happy with the performance of his players despite the defeat against Liverpool.

He admitted they do look short on confidence but insists they are still playing well.

“A little bit (unfortunate) yes because we start very well the game, with good ball possession, really good movements in attack and maybe a little bit unlucky about the decisions of the referee in the first half.

“They scored a great goal and then it’s always difficult again after that goal, but until half time we played very good football.

“We had the best chances, the situation of Elia, hands or no hands from the goalkeeper, it’s difficult to see.

“I can understand that decision of the referee but I don’t understand the second situation in the game because that’s a clear penalty and then it’s difficult defending well our opponent Liverpool with good organisation in the team.

“You know if you take more risk more space for them on the counter attack with Sterling and Sturridge.

“I am proud of how we play today. We know the last few games we are struggling a bit more scoring.

“If you play three times in a row at home and not scoring it’s hard to win games.

“That’s football, maybe a little bit about the confidence of the players, but the way we play today, the organisation, disappointed about the result but not about the performances of the players.”
