Francis Benali has joined Saints fans in paying tribute to club legend Bill Ellerington.

Rated as one of the finest right backs to ever play for Southampton, Ellerington passed away over the Easter weekend, aged 91.

“Bill was a grand old age but it’s so sad when someone passes away, especially such a figure like Bill,” said Benali.

“He’s an important part of the history of Saints’ history and you don’t have to look too far to read or hear about what a player he was and what he meant to the club.

“He deserves a big tribute.”

Saints fans have also paid tribute on the Echo website, dailyecho.co.uk.

Bartley41 said: “One of the “GREATS” and a wonderful servant to Southampton Football Club.

“A very crisp kicker of the ball, never hurried and I will always remember his sliding tackles.

“Good enough to keep Sir Alf Ramsey out of the Saints team, Bill was a class player and a joy to watch. Thank You for the pleasure you gave me!”

Avery T Decanary added: “Very, very sad news. A true great. Thank you Mr E, a true Saint. Rest in Peace.”

Other fans paying tribute hoped the club would pay tribute during Saturday’s game at home to Hull.

Saint Compo said: “RIP, Bill. When I was a nipper and started watching Saints from the ‘Chocolate Box’ at the Milton Road end, Bill was already a Saints stalwart. He and Tommy Traynor at left back were permanent fixtures in our defence for several years as my early love for Saints grew into long term devotion.

“I hope current Saints players will honour him with the wearing of black armbands in the Hull game.

“Condolences to the family he leaves behind.”

Les Miserables added: “Let’s hope that they club mark Bill’s passing in the appropriate manner before the game on Saturday.”
