Former Saints midfielder Andrew Surman insists the Champions League is still within reach for his old club.

The Cherries star reckons it is possible for Ronald Koeman’s men to make up the five-point gap to Manchester City, who currently hold fourth place, in their final six matches.

Surman said: “They are back in the mix, five points off. I wouldn’t put it out of their reach.”

Surman made 146 appearances for Saints before leaving the club in 2009, after they were relegated to League One and in administration, to join then Premier Leaguers Wolves.

The midfielder said of his former employers: “They’ve put themselves in a great position.

“I know Saints have got Manchester City on the last day – that could be an unbelievable crunch game.

“City are probably lacking a bit of confidence right now, and I’d love to see Saints get in the Champions League.

“They deserve it after the season they’ve had.”

Even if Saints do fall short, a Europa League spot is looking increasingly likely.

And Surman – who may join them in the top-flight of English football with surprise Championship leaders Bournemouth next season – believes that would be a wonderful result.

“It’s another step up, finish higher again than last season,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone expected Southampton to be in the Champions League at the start of the season, and it (the Europa League) is a massive step towards it.

“Any European football is great for the club. If it’s Champions League, that’s an unbelievable achievement.”
