Ronald Koeman reflected on Sadio Mane’s record breaking hat-trick and smiled “it’s not normal.”

The Senegalese international broke Robbie Fowler’s mark for the fastest ever Premier League treble, which had stood since 1994, scoring his hat-trick in two minutes and 56 seconds.

It sent Saints on their way to a 6-1 win over Aston Villa in their final game at St Mary’s this season.

Koeman said: “It’s not normal to score a hat-trick in two or three minutes, even not in the Premier League, in Holland, in the worst league in the world.

“He got the pace, we punished them about that and that was fantastic.”

He also revealed that he has spoken to Mane about making him a greater goal threat.

“I speak a lot to Sadio because first of all an important thing for the player is he has to know what his best quality and the rest of the players have to know what the best qualities of Sadio,” he admitted.

“Sometimes I have a discussion and say you sometimes go too much down and back into the ball. You need to make movements in the space and then you are so dangerous because nobody is so fast as you.

“He is a scorer player.

“If you go down or to the midfield you are a long way from the goal of the opponent and you have to use your qualities.

“Today he demonstrated what we expect from Sadio.

“He’s a great player, a great run player in front.

“We know for some players it’s the first season in the Premier League but you have to learn and still he’s a young player and he can do much better than he did. I believe that.”

The result was a remarkable way for Saints to sign off at St Mary’s for the season and Koeman was glowing in his praise for his side.

“I enjoyed it very much like all the fans because we play great football, great spirit from the beginning and that was the difference between the last away games and today and some help from Aston Villa who played about offside, high defending, a lot of space and then you have to punish that.

“A little bit unlucky because they told me after five minutes it wasn’t offside the goal of Pelle.

“We had great movement from our strikers, great movements from our midfielders.

“It’s not always we have high scores about all the chances what we create and that’s difficult.

Daily Echo:

“After half time it’s 5-1 and the human reaction is always to take it easy but we kept a good organisation in the second half, a good concentration in the second half and we scored a great 6-1, a great goal, team movements.

“An amazing afternoon.

“You don’t expect that one to be honest but I was expecting a reaction of the team after the last two games and it was great because it’s our last home game and the fans deserved this one because they had an amazing support of the team.

“It was a very enjoyable afternoon.”
