KELVIN Davis says his 300th Saints appearance represented a fantastic personal milestone - but was somewhat overshadowed by the 2-0 loss at Manchester City.

The keeper produced a fine performance at the Etihad Stadium, making a number of impressive saves, but it wasn't enough to earn a positive result on his landmark day.

The 38-year-old, who has one year left on his contract and has no intention of hanging up the gloves yet, admitted that it was still a day of pride for him and his family.

"It’s a milestone that came around and now I’ve got another one - that’s football and, for me, that’s being professional and looking at the next stage of what you want to achieve," said the club captain.

"I’m extremely proud to get to that mark and earlier this week we presented a shirt to Nathaniel Clyne in the dressing room (for 100 appearances) and you want to get to those landmarks of 100, 200, 300 and so on.

"It’s a fantastic personal thing for me and my family, who were here today, and now it’s onwards and upwards."

Reflecting on Saints' finish of seventh - a club record in the Premier League - Davis added: "We can look back on the season with a great amount of pride with how the club has handled everything and now it’s just all in the past.

"It’s great to look at, but we’ve got to go again next season."

Davis continued: "It’s another step forward and that’s how we see it. It’s safe to say that we’ve established ourselves in that part of the league and we’re looking to take the next step to keep progressing, we want to win things and see the club in the top level of the Premier League."

Davis admitted there was a feeling of what might have been at Saints this season, and he also spoke of the players' disappointment at not being able to guarantee Europa League football themselves, as they now wait for the result of next Saturday's FA Cup final.

"There was a sense of underachievement in the dressing room going into the game, and beforehand we said where better to finish the season than Man City," said Davis.

"We could have been going to less attractive places to go and get three points and there’s been a couple of away games recently where we’ve come off the pitch thinking we should have done better.

"Yes, this season has been fantastic, but it says a lot about our group that in there we’re looking at the results and thinking that we probably should have performed better and taken our chances.

"We didn’t do that today and there’s that disappointment of not getting into the Europa League."

Davis added: "We were disappointed with our first-half performance, because we allowed them a bit too much of the play.

"We spoke at half-time and our second half performance warranted at least a goal. We had chances in the first half, didn’t take them, and when you come to Man City and don’t take chances that happens."
