SAINTS’ ex-Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu has warned that his former charges will still pose a potent threat when Ronald Koeman’s side visit Stamford Bridge today, despite their poor form this season so far.

The £4m midfielder signed a three-year deal at St Mary’s after switching from the Premier League champions in August.

Having won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup during his four-year spell at the Bridge, Romeu has first-hand experience of what Chelsea, who currently sit 14th after seven games, are capable of.

The 24-year-old is wary that Jose Mourinho’s team will be a huge threat even though they’ve lost three league games already this term.

“Maybe from the outside, you think Southampton, they have the chance to win or to go and get the three points,” he said.

“But as a player, you know they’re (Chelsea) a top team and the players they have, if they play well, you won’t have a chance to win.

“So we have to make sure we don’t make any silly mistakes.

“You have to, defensively and offensively you do the right things and you have the chances.

“Otherwise I think, no way.”

Although Romeu has issued that warning, the Spaniard believes that Saints, riding high from a 3-1 win over Swansea, will be going to the Londoners for one purpose.

“Win,” he said. “We’re looking for the three points.

“Obviously, it’s Chelsea and obviously it’s going to be tough, but the main objective from our team is the three points.

“We have to go there, we know in the Premier League anything can happen – from the best to the worst – so we have to go there looking for the three points, preparing their game well and doing the right things.”

Romeu reckons that Mourinho’s champions are under pressure, but is sure they will eventually resolve their issues.

“It’s difficult to keep winning every year,” he explained. “They played amazingly last season, they didn’t lose many games.

“It’s difficult because, while you are winning, they are trying to beat you every game, you are the one that everyone wants to beat.

“It’s hard to keep winning.

“We’re seeing that they’re struggling to get three points every weekend.

“The qualities there, so I’m sure they will comeback.

“It’s just kind of maybe lacking confidence – not good enough – they will comeback with the players they have.”
