Ryan Bertrand could come back into the Saints squad to face Sunderland.

The England international left back has missed the start of the season with an injury he sustained during the pre-season trip to Holland.

However, he has returned to training and Saints boss Claude Puel will assess him fully tomorrow before making the call ahead of the visit of Sunderland.

“We will see tomorrow if Bertrand can come in the squad,” said Puel.

“He came back this week with training sessions and we will see if he can participate for this game with his partners.”

Puel confirmed that Oriol Romeu is fit after the injury that forced him off early against Manchester United, while Jeremy Pied will be absent with a knee injury picked up in training.

Puel refused to discuss the club’s record breaking £21m move for Sofiane Boufal, saying he preferred not to speak about players until they had signed.
